Anaal Nathrakh

The extremes music can take continues to astound me. This British industrial black metal band pull your face off and pound it in to a bloody pulp, and then eat it with a side of railroad spikes. If you're at all into extreme metal, check these guys out. Their latest, Hell Is Empty, And All the Devils Are Here, is as good a starting point as any.

Here's a sample of their debut album The Codex Necro, set to some clips from 28 Days Later. I don't think they have any official music videos.

so, two things.

1. that vocal style comes off as lazy to me, which is why i never dig on that style metal.

2. 28 days later was probably the most boring zombie movie i've ever seen. i tried to take a nap in that movie so that my 9 bucks wouldn't be wasted.

that is all.

It's an acquired taste. It took me a number of years to acclimate myself to the style. The first time I heard growled vocals I just laughed. I eventually discovered Opeth; initially I disliked the vocals but loved the music, but they grew on me.

Now I love almost all extreme-metal vocals. Lyrics have never been that important to me, at least at the outset of listening, so I don't mind too much if they are incomprehensible. The intensity of the sound is what gets me.

I still love most traditional style vocals though. It's pretty awesome when a band (like Opeth) will transition from the growled style to the clean style throughout their music.

I though 28 Days Later was rather fantastic, just because of the realism; it wasn't corny or campy like most zombie films. I could have done without the male nudity at the beginning though.

so, i kind of think that i should say where i stand musically, because i think we're relatively close on that. why am i doing this at 2 am? well, i'm glad you asked. it's because sometimes i'm a sufferer of insomnia.

my favorite metal band ever is slipknot. man. that's like really good chocolate. i love buckethead and primus, and i cut my teeth on prog rock a la darediablo and spock's beard. that's just a few.

at any rate, i thought, "hey, i haven't purchased a quality metal album in some time," so i started browsing itunes, and i found a band called "strapping young lad."

they seem to be one of the cooler metal acts i've seen in awhile. i think i might give 'em a download.

OH HELL YES. SYL is my second favorite band. They are (were) phenomenal. Devin Townsend, the creative force behind all of it, is friggin' genius. If you haven't chosen an album yet, go with City. Seriously some of the best metal ever created.

If by any chance they are too offensive or flat out insane for you (which I hope not) check out Townsend's solo work. Ocean Machine and Terria are masterpieces.

Oh yeah. As for Slipknot, I've only ever heard one full album, Vol. 3: The Subliminal Verses. I liked some of it. It hasn't really stuck with me though.

i ended up downloading a rerelease of city off of itunes. it's really cool stuff. i'm liking it. i've put the rest of their stuff in my queue on emusic. i'll be able to rock it on my ipod when'st i'm in new york.

i like this type of yelling music because it feels like another part of the music, not that it's been tacked on. it's mixed just right.

i've also put ocean machine and terria on my queue. i pay 20 bucks a month for this service, so why not use it, even if i don't like it, i gave it a thorough listen through.
